Environmental Health
The course is designed to provide an introduction for health professionals to the causes of environmental threats to Public Health, the size of the problem and how to utilise an evidence based approach to reducing these environmental threats to health.
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
- Have broad knowledge of the field of environmental health;
- Describe major ways in which the environment and human health are connected in different parts of the world, and in different populations;
- Identify the sources and routes of physical, chemical, and biological agents of the environment;
- Gain understanding on health impact among individuals/population of these exposures;
- Find ways to limit and control the exposure to the public; and mitigate the adverse effects of the environment on health.
The important aspects of climate change are not included in this course, there is a separate Open Online Course on Climate Change and Public Health.
How to navigate the course
Each topic comprises some introductory remarks. To access resources we think you will find interesting - click on the collections of resources in each section. There is a forum in each topic for reflection and each topic also has a quiz to check your understanding of some of the concepts in that topic. Again click on the hyperlinks to take you to these items in each topic.
We encourage you to reflect on what you have learned or comment on the course. When you click on the blue hyperlink in each topic labelled reflection, you will be able to add a new topic or respond to a previous one. You may want to share your learning from this and other readings, comment on the topics from your own experience, comment on others' posts, or provide feedback on how we can improve the content and presentation.
In the final topic you will see that you can gain a Certificate of Completion - the requirements for this are to access the resources in each section and pass the quiz at the end. This is a self-directed course, to be taken at your own pace. We encourage you to reflect on the issues, maybe make notes as you go along as this is a good way to be sure that you can internalise the information presented and the lessons to learn from it. This can then become part of your personal development plan.

This course is an Open Online Course (OOC) that was created by Magali Collonnaz, Halima Tahirkheli, and Rashmi Sood. It has been adopted from Peoples-uni and was further developed by NextGenU.org (NGU).
