Indigenous Health Homepage
IntroductionToday, there are approximately 370 million Indigenous peoples located in 70 countries around the world (United Nations, n.d.). Indigenous peoples are often at greater risk for ill health, as indicated by their high prevalence of major chronic diseases including diabetes, HIV/AIDS, and mental disorders. However, given their disadvantaged and marginalized status in society, indigenous peoples often do not have access to quality professional services (e.g. medical) that may be used to redress their poor health outcomes. In addition, both the number and quality of professionals competent in indigenous health are lacking globally.
This Indigenous Health course is intended for those in the health and social sciences fields, such as medical work, social work, and public health professionals in training and practice. This course takes a global perspective in examining the health and health disparities of indigenous peoples and provides historical, theoretical, analytical, and practical knowledge and tools to address them. Along the way, this course will facilitate an open and culturally safe dialogue among a global network of peers on comparative strategies to improve the health outcomes of indigenous peoples both locally and internationally.
The course is designed to help you:
- Identify the barriers that make the interaction between indigenous populations and health services difficult.
- Summarize the determinants of health of indigenous populations.
- Identify strategies to promote cultural safety in caring for indigenous populations.
- Analyze approaches to optimizing indigenous populations’ health through a just allocation of healthcare resources and access to health care services.
- Contribute to the development, dissemination, and critical assessment of knowledge/practices related to the improvement of indigenous populations’ health.
