      Introduction

      The Practice Support for Mental Health course has been developed to introduce you to the mhGAP Intervention Guide, and the use of the mhGAP Guide to direct assessment and management decisions of Mental, Neurological and Substance abuse (MNS) conditions.

      The course is designed to help you: 

      1. Summarize the mental health treatment gap and detail the characteristics and mode of use of the mhGAP Intervention Guide.
      2. Identify tips for respectful and effective communication.
      3. Detail the steps to perform a Mental, Neurological and Substance abuse (MNS) assessment.
      4. Detail the steps for the management of MNS conditions.
      5. Differentiate common presentations of MNS conditions.
      6. Recognize the central aspects of the assessment and management of MNS conditions.
      7. Use the mhGAP Guide to take assessment and management decisions of MNS conditions.

      This course was developed by NextGenU.org (NGU).

      There are three (3) modules to complete, which include:

      Module 1: What's mhGAP
      Module 2: Essential Care & Practice
      Module 3: Practice Activities Part 1: Assessment and Management of Mental, Neurological and Substance Abuse (MNS) Conditions.

      Approximate time for completion of this course is 8 hours at an average reading rate of 144 words/minute.

      Engaging with this course

      • To register for this course, complete the registration form. Begin the course with Module 1. For each lesson, read the description. 
      • There is a final quiz to assess your understanding of some important concepts. Click on the hyperlinks to take you to these items in each topic.

      Requirements to obtain the certificate 

      You may browse this course for free to learn for your personal enrichment. There are no requirements.

      This content is designed to enhance the study of nursing. To become a nurse, learners must successfully complete a program of study approved by the government or state-regulatory agency in their place of residence. Make sure you are in compliance with the scope of practice of your regulatory body.

      To obtain a certificate, a learner must successfully complete:

      • All reading requirements
      • The final exam with a minimum of 70% and a maximum of 3 attempts and
      • The self and course evaluation forms

      This course meets nationally approved standards of education developed for the addiction/substance use disorders counseling profession. This course's participants are assured that the continuing education (CE) credits provided will be accepted toward national credentialing by the NAADAC Certification Commission for Addiction Professionals (NCC AP), as well as by many of the individual state licensing/certification bodies in the addiction and other helping professions.

          Step 1: Select one of the primary MNS conditions.

          Step 2: Write a 300-500 word case study for the selected condition.

          In this activity, choose one of the MNS conditions and contrast the treatment guidelines of your country with the mhGAP guideline.

          Step 1: Choose one MNS condition.

          Step 2: Write a 200-450 word discussion post that contrasts the assessment and management guidelines of your country with the mhGAP guideline.
