    • Non-communicable Diseases: Hypertension Module

         7/5

Welcome to the Non-communicable Diseases Course: Hypertension Module. This module is designed to help Barangay Health Workers (BHWs) build practical knowledge and skills for identifying, monitoring, and supporting the prevention and management of hypertension in a community setting.

Because hypertension often develops without noticeable symptoms, early detection and routine screening during household visits are essential to reducing complications and improving health outcomes.

Barangay Health Workers (BHWs) play an important role in hypertension education, community-based screening, follow-up, and referral.

Like all NextGenU.org courses, this module is competency-based and designed for real-world application. It uses videos, short and extended guides, microlearning activities, quizzes, and practice scenarios to support accessible learning.

The estimated completion time for this module is 4 to 5 hours.

This module includes the following lessons:

Lesson 1: Understanding Blood Pressure and Hypertension
Lesson 2: The Role of Barangay Health Workers in Hypertension Management
Lesson 3: Identifying People at Risk During Community Visits
Lesson 4: Correct Blood Pressure Measurement and Common Mistakes
Lesson 5: Healthy Lifestyle Counseling for Hypertension Prevention

Key messages include routine blood pressure checks during household visits, identifying high-risk groups (e.g., pregnant women and older adults), addressing myths about hypertension medication, supporting adherence, and providing age- and gender-sensitive counseling. The module also covers prevention and control through healthy diet, meal planning, appropriate physical activity, smoking cessation, reduced alcohol use, and regular follow-up.

We hope you will find this module useful and practical as you strengthen your knowledge of hypertension and its management in everyday community health contexts.
