Read pages 24-30 in "Chapter 2. Weather and climate: changing human exposures" to understand past major climate changes, and the implications of these events on future climate change. In particular, Figure 2.5 demonstrates how drastically temperatures have changed over time, and Figure 2.6 reconstructs historical temperatures up to the present. Note how quickly temperatures have changed recently, and the influence of climate change on variability.
