    • Purpose

      This module will enable you to demonstrate a sound knowledge of distance higher education as a field of study as well as the underpinning principles and methodologies attached to distance higher education. This module will further provide important contextual and background knowledge for the study of the other compulsory and elective modules in this Postgraduate Diploma.

      Once you’ve completed the learning activities for this module, you should be able to:

      • Demonstrate an understanding of the history and development of distance education provision in South Africa.
      • Demonstrate an understanding of the study field: higher education and distance higher education.
      • Clarify the concepts: e-learning, online learning, open learning, distance learning.
